What Is Graph Paper?
Graph paper (also called grid paper or squared paper) is paper printed with a continuous square grid. Every square on the page is the same size, measured in millimeters or fractions of an inch. This makes it ideal for drawing to scale, plotting data, working through math problems, and sketching floor plans or electronic schematics.
Unlike lined paper, graph paper gives you both horizontal and vertical guides simultaneously. You can write text along the lines or use the grid squares as a unit of measurement: one square equals one unit at whatever scale you choose.
5mm Graph Paper: The Most Popular Size
The 5mm grid is the international standard for graph paper. It appears in European school notebooks, engineering pads, and scientific lab books across the world. Each square is exactly 5 millimeters wide and 5 millimeters tall, giving 38 columns and 54 rows on a standard A4 sheet with 15mm margins.
- Gray grid: the most neutral, works with any pen or pencil color
- Blue grid: classic engineering and technical drawing look
- Green grid: easier on the eyes for long writing sessions
- Black grid: high contrast, good for scanning or photographing notes
Print at 100% scale (Actual Size), never use Fit to Page. Measure one square with a ruler after printing to confirm it is exactly 5mm.
10mm Graph Paper (1 cm Grid)
The 10mm or 1-centimeter grid is twice the size of the standard 5mm grid. It is widely used for teaching younger students, for art and craft projects where large squares are needed, and for architectural sketches where each centimeter represents a real-world measurement.
On A4 paper at 10mm spacing you get 19 columns and 27 rows inside standard margins, a generous amount of space per cell for writing labels, numbers, or making freehand sketches.
2mm Fine Grid Paper
The 2mm fine grid is for precision work: electronics circuit layouts, detailed technical drawing, scientific data recording, and miniature art. The squares are small enough that most people use them as reference lines rather than writing inside individual cells.
For 2mm grid paper, use a fine-tip pen (0.3mm or 0.5mm). Thicker pen lines will bleed across multiple cells and make the paper hard to read.

The grid pattern scales perfectly to any paper size. Use A5 for a pocket notebook insert, Letter size for US-format binders, or A3 for large-format technical drawings. The grid spacing stays the same, only the number of squares changes.
- A4 (210x297mm): standard international paper, 38x54 squares at 5mm
- A5 (148x210mm): half of A4, fits in most notebooks and binders
- Letter (216x279mm): US standard, compatible with American printers and binders
- A3 (297x420mm): double A4, for large drawings and floor plans
Colored Grid Paper
Not all graph paper has to be gray or blue. Pink grid paper works well for journaling and bullet journal layouts. A light-colored grid fades into the background when you scan or photograph your work, leaving only your writing visible.

How to Print Graph Paper Correctly
The single most common mistake is letting the printer scale the page. Every printer dialog has a "Fit to Page" or "Shrink to Fit" option that is often enabled by default. This option shrinks your document by 3 to 8 percent to avoid edge clipping, which means your 5mm squares print at 4.6mm instead.

- Set it to Actual Size, 100%, or None, not Fit to Page
- Print one test page and measure a square with a ruler before printing more
After printing, measure 10 squares end-to-end with a ruler. They should span exactly 50mm for a 5mm grid. If they span 46mm you have a scale problem.
PDF vs PNG: Which Format to Download?
PDF is always the better choice for printing. PDF files are vector-based, which means the lines stay perfectly sharp at any zoom level or print size. PNG files are raster images, they have a fixed pixel resolution, and scaling them up for printing can produce blurry or jagged lines.
Use PNG if you need to insert the graph paper as a background layer in a design program or document editor. Use PDF or SVG for everything you intend to print on paper.
