What Is Music Staff Paper?

Music staff paper - also called manuscript paper or music score paper - is lined paper specifically designed for writing musical notation. Each set of five parallel lines is called a "staff" or "stave." Notes are placed on and between these lines to represent pitch. A page of staff paper typically contains 8 to 14 staves, depending on the spacing and paper size.

Standard Staff Paper (5-Line Stave)

The standard format uses sets of five evenly spaced horizontal lines. The distance between the first and last line of each staff - called the staff height - is usually between 7 mm and 10 mm. A taller staff is easier to read and write in, but fits fewer staves per page.

• 7 mm staff height - Compact. Fits 14 staves on A4. Good for sketching ideas quickly.
• 8.5 mm staff height - Standard. Fits 10–12 staves. Most common for general composition.
• 10 mm staff height - Large. Fits 8 staves. Best for beginners or when writing parts for older musicians.
• 12 mm+ - Extra large. Teaching tools, choral parts, or lead sheets.

Guitar Tablature Paper

Guitar tablature (tab) uses six horizontal lines to represent the six strings of a guitar. Numbers on each line tell the player which fret to press - no music theory required. Tab paper is faster to write and easier to read for self-taught guitarists, though it does not capture rhythm or dynamics as precisely as standard notation.

Ukulele Tab Paper

How Many Staves Do You Need Per Page?

This depends on what you are writing:

• Solo melody or lead sheet - 10–12 staves on A4. Plenty of room for lyrics below each staff.

• Full band arrangement - Use A3 paper with 8–10 staves, or stack instrument parts vertically.
• Quick composition sketches - Fewer, larger staves. Write fast, erase freely.

If you are printing parts for performers, the paper quality matters. Musicians handle their sheets constantly - they get marked up with pencil, folded, placed on stands, and sometimes spilled on.
